Digital Media Training for Teens

Shine On Teens Go “Behind the Scenes” for Career Advice from Chicago Marketing Professionals

Photography and video production are not careers you can learn in a book. These careers require “on the job” training from someone who knows what they’re doing because each marketing challenge requires a unique marketing solution. Solutions that come from “learning by doing” experiences.

That’s why Shine On Chicago’s mission for the last 5 years has been to give these teens “real-world” behind the scenes experiences to help them build their portfolios, and get hired to well-paying jobs that they enjoy because of their advanced skills and marketing knowledge.

This summer, Shine On Chicago teens travelled to different Chicago Museums to take photos and meet with the marketing professionals to learn about how they got their career start, and what skills are most important in their day-to-day marketing activities for the museum.

The teens met with marketing and social media folks at The Nature Museum, The Lincoln Park Zoo, The Shedd Aquarium, The Field Museum, The Chicago Park District, The Museum of Mexican Art and The Art Institute — where they learned what it takes to do a particular marketing job, and could see if it was a career that they might be interested in.

The best teen shots from the museum Photo Safari were then sent to the museums’ social media departments where they were encouraged to use the images and get Shine On teens “real world” photo experience.

The program gave CTE (Career Training & Education) Teens on the “Design Track” at their high schools a unique opportunity to see a variety of marketing, photography and design jobs from organizations all connected to CLX, The Chicago Learning Exchange.

Please consider a donation to help support this program again next summer.
