2018 Summer Photo Safari Program
Last summer, Shine On, Chicago partnered with The Chicago Public Library and The Chicago Public Schools to teach teens how to operate a DSLR cameras while encouraging them to capture the beauty in different neighborhoods and museums around Chicago.
Special thanks to the 3 local CPL branches that participated in our summer Safari program: West Belmont, Back of the Yards, and Bessie Coleman Library.
During the 6-week summer program, every 2 weeks the Photo Safari traveled to one of 3 CPL branches and offer local teens the opportunity to participate in our neighborhood Photo Safaris.
Part of the uniqueness of this program is that our 8 Core Teens helped mentor local branch teens and helped teach them the basics of using a DSLR camera while taking pictures of the different Chicago neighborhoods and museums.
In addition, teens learned how to navigate the city safely using the CTA and public transportation as we visit different Chicago neighborhoods and museums.

One goal of the program was to help teens find beauty and self-expression through the photos they take in different Chicago neighborhoods; at the same time, to help them build a Digital Portfolio they can use to pursue higher ed and career-building opportunities.
The teen Photo Safari images were displayed at The West Belmont Branch, The Back of the Yards Branch, The Toman Branch, The Harold Washington Library, The Back of the Yards Coffee House, and The Art Institute of Chicago!
